Park History

This park, between Cobb Street and Duke Street, was once the orchard and gardens that supported the adjacent John Sprunt Hill house. According to the Open Durham (then, Endangered Durham) web site, George Watts Hill, Jr. noted that the property once contained not only a greenhouse, but also a carriage house and stable including a blacksmith shop and living quarters for staff, a smoke house, a well house, and a coal drop rail spur line as well. Those structures remained on the site until at least the 1950s.
