Park History
The location of this park and recreation center has undergone several major changes during its history. It was originally called "Hickstown," named after its owner Hawkins Hicks. In 1922, a three teacher school was built on the property, named Hickstown School, and grew in funding and size for the next five years, being a key attribution to the huge growth in Durham County at the time. This school was demolished in 1956 and replaced with a modern brick structure in the late 1950s that was used for only 10 years. It has now been divided into senior housing and the W.I. Patterson Recreation Center.
