East Durham Park Playground Closed September 26-October 26

East Durham Park Playground Closure

Durham Parks and Recreation will be closing the playground at East Durham Park (1200 N. Alston Avenue) beginning Monday, September 26 to replace the safety surfacing. The work is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday, October 26, weather permitting.

While the playground is under renovation, patrons can visit nearby playgrounds at Sherwood Park (1720 Cheek Road) and Edgemont Park (205 S. Elm Street).

Rubber Mulch in DPR Playgrounds Information

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) considers the safety of every child who visits our playgrounds to be our utmost priority. Playground specialists and park planners across the country install playgrounds on a regular basis and DPR follows their standards to enhance the safety for users.

All of our 56 playgrounds are regularly inspected, and have consistently met or exceeded industry standard health and safety codes. Last year, the use of rubber mulch made from recycled tires was brought to our attention as a source of safety and health concerns for some residents.

In light of concerns from the park users, Durham City Council voted to remove the shredded rubber mulch that covers half of the playground surface at East Durham Park. The city has allocated about approximately $20,000 to replace the loose mulch but not the bonded mulch on the playground.
