Hoover Road Athletic Park Groundbreaking

On Thursday, October 29, Durham Parks and Recreation broke ground on a major construction project in East Durham – Hoover Road Athletic Park, located at 632 North Hoover Road.

As more and more residents are venturing outside, outdoor amenities like this park become even more crucial to the community’s overall health and wellness. As such, the community’s value and need of parks and recreation amenities have increased.

This exciting addition for Durham is located on the east-side, and is a direct result of community feedback and need. “Several of our great community partners, including the Recreation Advisory Commission, along with countless residents, have driven this initiative. “This is the type of engagement we love, and we’re thrilled we can meet the needs of our community” – Tom Dawson, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation.

The start of construction demonstrates how Durham community engagement thrives in even the most challenging times. Thanks to Mayor Schewel serving as a champion of the project and with strong support from the City Council and the City Manager’s office, the community’s needs for additional parks and athletic field space are being fulfilled.

The 25-acre athletic park is scheduled to be completed by November 2021 and will include:

  • Four natural grass, lighted fields
  • Ample parking with charging capability for E-Cars
  • A large picnic shelter
  • Playground and trails
