Shelly A. Green

Shelly Green is the immediate Past President & CEO of Discover Durham, where she has worked for nearly 20 years. She retired in September 2019.

She has been a state and national thought leader for travel and tourism for more than three decades serving in numerous state, regional and national leadership positions elevating tourism to its highest potential for the benefit of communities worldwide. In retirement she is a sought-after speaker and facilitator for destinations large and small.

A strong advocate for public service, Green has served in numerous leadership positions in the Durham Rotary Club, Scenic North Carolina, and a regional SKAL Chapter for hospitality executives,  She was a member of the Superintendent’s Business Advisory Council for Durham Public Schools, was a regular volunteer reading tutor at Y.E. Smith Elementary School and served as chair and vice chair of the City’s Passenger Vehicle for Hire Commission. She also served as the co-chair of the City of Durham’s Sesquicentennial, a yearlong commemoration recognizing Durham’s past, present and future.  The efforts of that committee resulted in raising almost $1 million in public and private funds that resulted in 150 events and engagements celebrating Durham’s rich history and highly promising future throughout 2019.

Before joining Discover Durham, Shelly led the Asheville Convention & Visitors Bureau and was the founding Executive Director of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau. Prior to her work in destination marketing, Shelly was a public-school teacher and college administrator in Florida.  She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from the University of Miami.
